How do I get from point “A” to point “B”?

JMLS Building Access and Security

Building Access: During your stay, you will be provided with a temporary ID card. Please carry your ID card with you at all times and do not share your ID with others. You will need to show your ID to the security guard on the first floor whenever you enter the building.

Library Access: Your ID card will allow you to enter the JMLS law library, which is located on the 6th floor. To enter the law library, simply swipe your ID card over one of the black sensors in front of the library turnstiles. When you hear a short beep, you may proceed through the turnstiles.

Restrooms: Both men’s and women’s restrooms will be unlocked on the floors where the competition rounds take place as well as on 3-East. If you need access to the women’s restroom in the library, please see the reference librarian for assistance.

Lost ID: If your ID is lost or damaged, we will provide a replacement immediately. If your ID is lost while you are away from the building, please inform the security guard at the front desk that you are here for the Moot Court competition, and you have lost your ID. To obtain a replacement ID, please go to the 6th floor law library and ask for Rick Regan or Dave Martino.

Dirksen Federal Building Access

The evening preliminary rounds are held in the Dirksen Federal Courthouse located directly across Jackson Street (turn right when exiting the JMLS building). All competitors, coaches and their guests must enter the courthouse by 5:45p.m. (even if you are competing in the 7:45 p.m. rounds). You must go through security, including the metal detectors. Any items you are carrying must go through the x-ray machine. Security officers have a list of competitors, coaches and their guests, however, security officers may require a picture ID. No food or beverages may be brought into the courthouse. Snacks will be available in the competitor’s ready room #2575.

Where can I check my email or do a little research?

Computer Access
For your convenience, we have arranged to provide some limited computer service within JMLS. Due to the large number of students and coaches attending, we ask that you use the following services judiciously. These services are offered as a courtesy to all the participants, and as such, availability may be limited. Please be courteous and patient.

Computers - There will be one computer set up for limited use in the 3-East room. This computer is for all participants and their coaches. Please be considerate of other guests.

Email - If the need arises, you may check your email at one of the two kiosks behind the reference desk on the 6th floor of the law library. Guest ID’s will be available at the circulation desk.

Lexis/Westlaw - You may also use the two computers on the 6th floor of the law library for Lexis and Westlaw access. If you are traveling from abroad, you have already been provided with a Lexis ID. Please see the reference librarian for any additional assistance you may need.

Printing - Should the need to print materials arise, print cards will be available for your use at the circulation desk. There is also a Kinko's near the school, on Wabash Ave. To get to the Kinko's, turn right when exiting JMLS. Then, turn right on Jackson Blvd. and walk two blocks to Wabash Ave. Turn left onto Wabash Ave., and the Kinko's is about one and a half blocks down on your right (just past Adams St.).

Copying - You will need a copy card to use the copy machines in the law library. The reference librarians have two copy cards available that guests may use. Please be sure to return them to a librarian when you are finished. You may also use the Kinko's on Wabash Ave. (See directions above).

Can I watch the elimination rounds?

Yes, but only if your team has been eliminated and will not be participating in any additional rounds.

Viewing the Final Rounds
The Semifinal, Ambassador and Final rounds will be held in the Baim Courtroom on the 3rd floor of the JMLS building. Due to the limited seating available in that room, there will be monitors set up in the 3-East room (on the 3rd floor) for you to view those rounds.

Where is there a decent restaurant or place to shop?

Depending on how far you are willing to venture from JMLS, Chicago offers an infinite number of stores and restaurants to choose from. Below is a list of some of the closest establishments that you will find most convenient.

Walgreen's - There is a Walgreen's at the corner of Jackson Blvd. and State St. Turn right when exiting the building, then right onto Jackson and Walgreen's is on your right.

Plymouth Restaurant: Open 24 hours and located next door (turn left when exiting the JMLS building). Choose between the diner upstairs or the bar downstairs.

Arby's and Chipotle - Turn right when exiting the building, then right onto Jackson Blvd., and these two restaurants are about a half block past State St., on your left.

McDonalds Jimmy John's and Subway - Turn right when exiting the building, then right onto Jackson Blvd. and left onto State St. McDonalds and Subway will be on your left, and Jimmy John's is on your right.

Dunkin Donuts - Turn right when exiting the building, then left onto Jackson Blvd. and Dunkin Donuts is on you left at the corner of Jackson and Dearborn. There is also a place across the street where you can get good bagels, muffins and the such.

CTA Train Stations - For the Brown, Orange and Purple lines, turn left when exiting the building, and the station will be one block in front of you (above ground). For the Red line, turn right when exiting the building, right on Jackson Blvd., and left or right on State St. (stairs to the underground station are on both sides of the street). For the Blue line, turn right when exiting the building, then left onto Jackson Blvd., and left or right on Dearborn (stairs to the underground station are on both sides of the street).
